The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, has called for the voluntary surrender of illegally held weapons and ammunition in a bid to restore peace and normalcy in the state. The request follows a period of prolonged unrest that has disrupted life for the people of both the Valley and Hills for over 20 months.
In an official statement, the Governor emphasized that the recent series of incidents have caused significant hardships for the people of Manipur, severely impacting communal harmony. In light of this, he urged all communities to unite in an effort to end hostilities and reinstate peace and order.
Governor Bhalla specifically appealed to the youth in both the Valley and Hills to take a decisive step towards peace by returning looted and illegally held firearms to the nearest Police Station, Outpost, or Security Forces Camp. The surrender period is set for the next seven days, starting today, and the Governor assured that no punitive action would be taken against individuals who voluntarily return the weapons within the stipulated time frame. However, he cautioned that after this period, strict legal measures would be enforced for the possession of such arms.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to resolving the situation peacefully, the Governor emphasized that safeguarding the future of the youth and rebuilding the state is the shared responsibility of all. “Let us rebuild our State together with hope and trust for a brighter future,” Governor Bhalla concluded, urging citizens to come forward and choose peace.
