In one of the biggest crackdowns against narcotics in Mizoram, the state’s Excise & Narcotics Department, in a joint operation with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Border Security Force’s 191 Battalion, seized methamphetamine tablets and heroin worth over ₹75 crore on Thursday evening.
The operation was launched on August 21 along National Highway-06A between Keifang and Seling in Aizawl district, about 60 km from the state capital. Acting on specific intelligence, the joint team intercepted four vehicles, recovering nearly 49 kilograms of methamphetamine—equivalent to about five lakh tablets—and 36 grams of heroin concealed in hidden compartments. Officials described it as the second-largest drug haul in Mizoram’s history.
Authorities arrested eight individuals in connection with the seizure: Zoramsiama, Lalruatkima, Nanglamthanga, David Lalhmachhuana, T. Chatuanvanlalnghaka, Lalramthara, Hmangaihzaua and Lalrammuana. They are being interrogated to establish their links with transnational smuggling cartels. Four vehicles, including two heavy trucks, a Renault Duster SUV and a Mahindra Bolero, were also impounded.

Investigators believe the consignment originated from across the porous Myanmar border, which has increasingly become a major route for cartels trafficking synthetic drugs into India. From Mizoram, the narcotics were likely destined for markets in other parts of the country where meth fetches an even higher street value.

“This is a major success in our fight against synthetic drugs. The international value of the seized methamphetamine is about ₹75 crore, and we remain committed to intensifying joint operations to dismantle such networks,” a senior Excise & Narcotics Department official said.
Officials added that the arrested suspects would be produced in court under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The operation, carried out with seamless coordination between state and central agencies, was described as a “decisive blow” to organized narcotics syndicates operating in the Northeast.

The seizure comes amid an alarming surge in drug smuggling through Mizoram. Experts warn that the rising inflow of synthetic drugs poses not only a major law enforcement challenge but also a growing public health crisis in the region.
The seizure adds to a growing list of major drug busts in Mizoram in recent months, underscoring the state’s vulnerability due to its strategic location along the Indo-Myanmar border. While heroin trafficking has historically dominated the narcotics trade in the region, methamphetamine—locally known as “party drugs” or “ice”—is emerging as a bigger threat both for law enforcement and public health.
