For causing disruption in the House, thirty-three opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) were suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Winter Session.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress, T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran of the DMK, and Saugata Roy of the TMC are among the suspended MPs.
Speaking about his suspension, Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told news agency ANI, “All leaders, including me, have been suspended. We have been demanding for days to reinstate our MPs who were suspended earlier and that the Home Minister come to the House and give a statement (on Parliament security breach).”
He added, “Today, the government has reached the heights of tyranny.”
30 of them were suspended for the remainder of the Winter Session, while the remaining three were suspended until the Privileges Committee report was received. The three—K Jayakumar, Vijay Vasanth, and Abdul Khaleque—had scaled the Speaker’s podium.
Prahlad Joshi, the minister of Parliamentary Affairs, submitted the motion to suspend these members of parliament in the House. A voice vote later approved it.
This followed opposition members’ persistent protests about the alleged security breach in the Parliament on December 13. The Lok Sabha has been adjourned for the day due to protests by opposition Members of Parliament.
