‘She has failed to handle the situation’: Asha Devi
The mother of Nirbhaya, the victim of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, has sought West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, claiming she “failed” to handle the situation following widespread protests against the violent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
On August 9, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her colleagues and doctors around the country have been protesting to demand justice for her.

Speaking to the news agency PTI, Asha Devi also chastised Ms Banerjee for “trying to divert people’s attention” by organizing protests. Mamata Banerjee led a rally this week demanding the death punishment for those found guilty in the case.
“Instead of using her authority to take action against the culprits, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the public,” Asha Devi was cited as saying by PTI.
“She is a woman.” She should have taken strict action against the perpetrators in order to fulfill her role as the state’s leader. She should quit since she failed to handle the matter,” she said.
Asha Devi further stated that until the central and state governments take genuine steps to seek fast judicial justice for rapists, such barbarism will continue to occur in various regions of the country on a daily basis.
“When girls are not safe in Kolkata’s medical college and such barbarity is committed against them, then one can understand the state of women’s safety in the country,” she told PTI.
Centre to states amid nationwide protests
Amid countrywide protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Centre has issued a directive to all states, requiring them to submit reports on law and order situations every two hours.
According to the notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked all state police units in the country to submit reports every two hours via email, fax, or even WhatsApp.
“Regarding the two hourly law and order situation reports. The responsible authority has requested that you monitor your state/UT’s law and order situation report regarding the murder of a trainee lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.” The MHA has reportedly allegedly that a continuous two-hourly law and order situation report in this regard be transmitted to the MHA control room by fax/e-mail/WhatsApp beginning at 4 p.m. today (16/08/24).
