On Saturday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare encouraged protesting physicians and medical students across the country to resume their activities and assured them that every effort would be made to protect the safety of healthcare personnel.
The ministry has also proposed forming a committee to recommend steps for the safety of healthcare personnel at work. It stated that representatives from all stakeholders, including state governments, will be invited to submit their thoughts with the group.

Amidst the ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, representatives of the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association (IMA), and Resident Doctors’ Associations of Governmental Medical Colleges and Hospitals of Delhi met with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in New Delhi.
Concerned about healthcare workers’ safety and security at work, the associations representing doctors have made demands.
Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
The rape of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor has outraged the nation. Her half-naked body with serious injuries was discovered in a seminar hall at R G Kar Medical College last Thursday, where she was said to have gone to rest during her shift.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide strike. IMA has proclaimed a 24-hour withdrawal of services by all modern medicine doctors throughout the country, regardless of sector or place of employment. Emergencies and casualties will continue to function. No OPDs. No elective operations. The withdrawal began at 6 a.m. on Saturday and will conclude at 6 a.m. on Sunday, 18 August 2024.
