Indian Coast Guard Director General dies of heart attack

Rakesh Pal, director general of the Indian Coast Guard, died of a heart attack in Chennai on Sunday, according to officials.

Pal complained of uneasiness; was admitted

Rakesh Pal, director general of the Indian Coast Guard, died of a heart attack in Chennai on Sunday, according to officials.

Pal was slated to attend an Indian Coast Guard ceremony alongside Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. However, he complained of uneasiness and was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital earlier on Sunday, according to officials.

Pal hails from Uttar Pradesh and is a graduate of the Indian Naval Academy. He joined the Indian Coast Guard in January 1989. He was named director general of the Indian Coast Guard in July 2023.

The former director general received professional training in gunnery and weapons systems at the Indian Naval School Dronacharya in Kochi, as well as an Electro-Optics Fire Control Solution course in the United Kingdom.

Pal held the recognition of being first gunner of the Coast Guard

Pal was recognized as the Coast Guard’s first gunner. He received the Tatrakshak Medal (TM) in 2013 and the President Tatrakshak Medal (PTM) for exceptional service in 2018.

Rakesh Pal previously served as Commander Coast Guard Region (North West) in Gandhinagar, as well as Deputy Director General (Policy and Plans) and Additional Director General Coast Guard at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi.
