India’s defense manufacturing sector has achieved a significant milestone as an Indian private firm secured a tender to export 0.338 Lapua Magnum sniper rifles, reportedly to Armenia. This move marks a substantial step forward in India’s defense export capabilities, with implications reaching beyond borders.

Indian defense exports soared to an unprecedented Rs 21,083 crore (approximately US$ 2.63 billion) in the Financial Year (FY) 2023-24, marking a remarkable 32.5% surge compared to the preceding fiscal year, which stood at Rs 15,920 crore. These latest statistics underscore a 31-fold increase in defense exports over the past decade compared to FY 2013-14.

India-Armenia Has A History of Defense Deals

In July 2023, India made its first-ever export of domestically-made Pinaka rocket systems to Armenia. The delivery sparked controversy as Azerbaijan alleged the weapons were transported through Iran to Armenia’s southern border. Despite the geopolitical tensions, Armenia’s acquisition of Indian defense equipment highlights the growing demand for advanced weaponry amid regional conflicts, particularly in the context of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.

The Pinaka rocket system, named after the bow of the Indian deity Shiva, boasts a range of 40 kilometers and is renowned for its accuracy, earning it the moniker “Indian HIMARS.” Armenia’s purchase, valued at $260 million, included several Pinaka launcher systems and associated ammunition, signaling a significant investment in bolstering its defense capabilities.

Following the Pinaka deal, Armenia received its first shipment of India’s Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) in August 2023. With Yerevan reportedly ordering 84 of these weapons for $155.5 million, India solidified its position as a reliable supplier of cutting-edge defense equipment.

India’s foray into defense exports signifies a shift in its traditionally underexplored defense export segment. Recent initiatives by the Indian government aim to tap into the vast potential of this sector, catalyzing a renewed push for defense exports and bolstering the domestic defense industry.

The recent tender win for sniper rifles signifies a significant achievement for India’s defense export ambitions. It reflects the competitive edge that Indian manufacturers offer regarding cost-effectiveness and versatility, positioning India as a critical player in the global defense export market.

While challenges persist, including encouraging private sector participation and addressing regulatory barriers, India’s proactive measures indicate a promising trajectory for the sector. With strategic initiatives and industry collaboration, India is poised to emerge as a significant player in the global defense export landscape, further solidifying its position as a reliable supplier of advanced defense equipment.
