Parliament witnessed stormy scenes as the BJP accused Congress leader Sonia Gandhi of alleged ties with billionaire George Soros, while the Congress demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani controversyBY PC Bureau
The parliament once again saw disruption and chaos as fresh allegations by BJP linking former Congress president Sonia Gandhi with controversial US billionaire George Sorors sparked uproar on Thursday. BJP leaders demanded clarity on purported connections between Sonia Gandhi and Soros, claiming these ties were part of a conspiracy to destabilize the Narendra Modi government.
In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar was forced to adjourn proceedings amidst disorder, initially until 2 PM. The Lok Sabha faced similar chaos, adjourning first until 1 PM and later until 2 PM after repeated disruptions.
BJP Questions Congress-Soros Links
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey raised the issue, alleging financial and personal links between Sonia Gandhi and Soros. “Soros visited India in 2004 and 2009, acquiring a 5% stake in the Bombay Stock Exchange. He profited from the Indian share market between 2010 and 2014. What is the relationship between Soros and the Gandhi family?” Dubey asked.
Observors pointed out that Soros is an international investor whose dealings in India were never questioned. The BJP appears intent on leveraging his name to attack the Congress and deflect from the Adani controversy, they said.
Adding weight to the allegations, BJP national president JP Nadda claimed the public deserved to know the truth. “Soros, who donates billions to destabilize India, has found support in Congress, which amplifies his agenda. This is disgraceful and must be condemned,” Nadda asserted.
Opposition Strikes Back
Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge dismissed the allegations as a distraction from pressing issues. As he attempted to respond, tempers flared further, forcing the Rajya Sabha Chairman to adjourn the House once more. “They want to deflect attention from critical matters,” Kharge said amidst the din.
Nadda Criticizes Kharge Over Dhankhar Impeachment Remarks
The controversy escalated as Nadda criticized Kharge for remarks against Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar. The Opposition had previously moved a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar, further straining relations in the House. “Criticizing the Chair’s rulings constitutes contempt of the House and sets a dangerous precedent,” Nadda said, labeling Kharge’s comments “deeply objectionable.”
A Deepening Political Divide
The BJP has also alleged that the Congress is tied to organizations funded by the George Soros Foundation, which it accuses of destabilizing India and promoting separatist agendas, including the idea of separating Kashmir from India.
As the Parliament remains locked in bitter exchanges, the allegations and counter-allegations underscore the widening gulf between the ruling party and the Opposition. For the BJP, the strategy of attacking Congress over Soros appears aimed at shifting focus from the Adani controversy, but it has further fueled the already volatile political landscape.
