Thousands in Sohra held a candlelight vigil for murdered tourist Raja Raghuvanshi, condemning national media’s “malicious misinformation campaign” that falsely depicted Meghalaya as crime-ridden. They’re seeking an apology or preparing for legal consequences.

Wednesday, June 11, 2025 — Thousands of residents gathered in Sohra (Cherrapunji) on Tuesday evening for a candlelight vigil to honor Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore tourist allegedly murdered in the region on May 23. Organized by the Hima Sohra, the event saw locals light candles, offer prayers, and express solidarity with the victim’s family. However, the gathering also served as a platform for outrage against national media outlets accused of misrepresenting Meghalaya as unsafe, with the community issuing a stern 24-hour ultimatum for a public apology or face legal action.

The vigil, attended by prominent figures including Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem and former KHADC Chief Executive Member Titosstarwell Chyne, reflected deep sorrow for Raghuvanshi, who was allegedly killed by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and three accomplices during their honeymoon visit. The four accused are currently in police custody and facing trial in Shillong, with Meghalaya Police assuring swift justice.

“We are heartbroken by this tragedy. Raja was a guest in our land, welcomed with open hearts,” said MLA Mylliem, addressing the crowd. “It is shameful that national media chose to paint Sohra as dangerous instead of reporting responsibly. This is not who we are.”

The community’s grief was compounded by anger over what they called a “malicious misinformation campaign” by TV channels, online commentators, and social media users. These outlets portrayed Sohra and Meghalaya as crime-prone, tarnishing the region’s reputation as a peaceful tourist destination known for its scenic beauty and hospitality.

A Hima Sohra spokesperson delivered a clear demand: “We call for an unconditional apology from all national media houses and individuals who spread false and defamatory content about Sohra and its people. If no apology is forthcoming within 24 hours, we will file FIRs and pursue legal action.”

Civil society leaders emphasized Meghalaya’s tradition of peace and warmth, urging the public not to let an

isolated crime overshadow the region’s welcoming culture. “This act was committed by outsiders, not our people,” one leader noted. “Meghalaya remains a safe haven for visitors.”

Meghalaya Police confirmed that the investigation into Raghuvanshi’s murder is progressing, with the accused presented before the Shillong court. Authorities reiterated their commitment to delivering justice.

The vigil concluded with a resolute message: justice for Raja, respect for Meghalaya, and accountability for those who distort the truth. As the 24-hour deadline looms, all eyes are on the national media’s response, with the people of Sohra prepared to take legal steps to defend their homeland’s honor.
