October 9, 2026 — A Kuki civilian woman, identified as Pi Domkhonei Touthang, was reportedly shot dead at Chassad village in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Friday night, amid a protest by women against the alleged arrest and detention of village volunteers.
Kuki-Zo civil society organisations have alleged that personnel of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) deployed in the Chassad–Kamjong area opened fire during the protest. According to these accounts, the woman succumbed to her injuries at around 9.40 pm.
According to the account being circulated, Kuki women attempted to intervene when Maniput RB personnel tried to carry out an operation in the area and targetted male members of the community, mostly Kuki-Zo village volunteers. . During the incident, the Kuki woman was reportedly shot and killed.

The woman was identified as the wife of Lallenmang Touthang and was said to be the mother of five children—three boys and two girls.
The reported incident comes amid continuing tensions and violence between Kuki and Tangkhul Naga groups in Manipur’s border districts, where competing allegations over attacks and armed-group involvement have complicated efforts to establish responsibility for individual incidents.
Security forces also reported defusing 27 improvised explosive devices along the Shangkhalok–Pilong route in Kamjong district on Friday, underscoring the continuing security concerns in the border belt.
The reported killing of Domkhonei Touthang threatens to add to tensions in an area already marked by civilian deaths and competing allegations. Confirmation from police or the district administration is still needed to establish the circumstances of Friday night’s incident and determine responsibility.
