The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has apprehended three individuals in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu for reportedly smuggling 9.725 kilograms of gold worth over Rs 5,89,65,707Â on Saturday,Â
New Delhi: Three individuals have been apprehended by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for smuggling 9.725 kilograms of gold, valued at more than Rs 5,89,65,707, in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu an official said here on Saturday.
A senior DRI officer stated that the arrests were made on August 23. Subsequently, the officers conducted search operations at six locations belonging to the accused and confiscated electronic evidence and Rs 6 lakh in cash. He added, the gold that was confiscated was done so in accordance with section 110 of the Customs Act. Additionally, the accused individuals were arrested in accordance with section 104 of the same act.

The DRI officers received specific intelligence that a husband-and-wife duo was transporting smuggled gold from Sri Lanka through the Thondi Coastal area of Ramnad District to Chennai via a government bus. Acting on this information, the officers intercepted the bus near Kalpalayam, Trichy, and questioned the couple. They admitted to carrying smuggled gold for onward delivery to Chennai.
The officers also apprehended the person who handed over the gold to the couple in a swift follow-up operation. Three premises linked to the gold supplier were immediately searched, and around 6 lakh rupees in cash and other electronic evidence were seized.
The individuals were brought before a local court and were subsequently placed into judicial custody for a period of 14 days.
Detailed investigation into the matter is underway.
