The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest in Delhi escalated on Monday, July 20, 2026, as hundreds of protesters marched towards Parliament demanding accountability over failures in India’s education system. Security forces stopped demonstrators near Parliament and used tear gas shells and batons to disperse the crowd.
Protesters approaching Parliament from the Sansad Marg side were stopped outside the Sansad Marg Police Station. Several demonstrators sustained minor injuries during the police action and received first aid at the protest site.
Tear Gas Fired Near Press Club of India
Security personnel fired tear gas shells at protesters who were halted on Raisina Road, approximately 200 metres from Parliament. Eyewitnesses reported heavy security deployment in the area as authorities attempted to prevent protesters from moving further towards the Parliament complex.
The situation remained tense as demonstrators continued raising slogans and demanding government action.
CJP Leaders to Meet Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) stated that the Central government has initiated talks with the organisation. CJP spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Sourav Das are scheduled to meet Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to present the group’s demands.
The meeting is expected to focus on concerns related to the education system and the ongoing protest movement led by activist Sonam Wangchuk.
Sonam Wangchuk Writes to Safdarjung Hospital, Seeks to Join Parliament March
Activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk informed Safdarjung Hospital authorities through a letter that he wished to participate in the Parliament March despite his deteriorating health condition.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike and has emerged as the face of the protest demanding accountability and reforms in India’s education system.
Delhi Police Use Batons on Students and Youth Activists
According to eyewitnesses, Delhi Police used sticks and batons to disperse hundreds of students and youth activists marching from Mandi House Metro Station towards Jantar Mantar.
The protest witnessed significant participation from students and civil society members, who voiced their support for education reforms and greater governmental accountability.
Delhi Metro Closes Five Stations Amid Security Concerns
In view of the Parliament March, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) temporarily closed five metro stations citing security reasons. Authorities later reopened the gates at Central Secretariat and Rajiv Chowk Metro stations and restored interchange facilities for commuters.
The temporary restrictions led to disruptions for passengers travelling through central Delhi during the protest.

Sonam Wangchuk Says He Will End Hunger Strike Under Certain Conditions
Sonam Wangchuk announced that he is willing to end his hunger strike on Monday if the government accepts responsibility for failures in the education system or if Members of Parliament agree to raise the issue during the ongoing Parliament session.
His statement has added urgency to the ongoing discussions between protest leaders and government representatives.
