Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Friday proposed a plan to offer housing for sanitation workers through monthly installments. According to the AAP leader, the scheme will eventually include other government employees.
During a press conference, Kejriwal stated that he has penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to allocate land to the Delhi government for building residences for government employees. According to the Constitutional framework, the Centre governs land in the national capital.
“I want to draw your attention towards a significant issue related to the sanitation workers working in the NDMC and MCD regions. These employees are the foundation of our city’s sanitation system. While serving, they live in housing supplied by the government. However, following retirement, they must leave these residences. They cannot buy their own houses or manage the steep rents in Delhi, putting them and their families in a vulnerable position,” stated Arvind Kejriwal.
“Given that land related matters in Delhi are managed by the central government, I urge the central government to allocate land to sanitation workers at reduced rates. The Delhi government can build homes on this land for them, and the laborers can pay back the cost of these homes to the government in manageable instalments,” Kejriwal stated.

Kejriwal further mentioned that the Delhi government’s scheme can initially begin with sanitation workers and later be expanded to include all government employees.
The Prime Minister has not responded to Arvind Kejriwal’s proposal yet.
Earlier on January 17, Kejriwal wrote to PM Modi, proposing to offer metro rides to students in Delhi at 50% of the standard fare. In his letter to PM Modi, Arvind Kejriwal suggested that the subsidy provided to students should be shared equally between the Delhi and Central governments.
