A serving Indian Army soldier, Devinder Singh, has been arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive military intelligence to Pakistan’s ISI. Hailing from Nihalgarh village in Punjab’s Sangrur district, he was arrested on July 14, 2025, in Uri, Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The arrest was carried out by the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) of the Punjab Police on charges of espionage, with investigators alleging he leaked classified military information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

His arrest stemmed from intelligence obtained during the interrogation of Gurpreet Singh—alias Guri or Fauji—a former soldier currently in Ferozepur Jail on similar charges. According to officials, Devinder and Gurpreet first met in 2017 during military training in Pune and later served together at postings in Sikkim and Jammu and Kashmir. It was during this time, investigators claim, that they began collecting sensitive military documents.

Some of this classified information was allegedly shared with ISI operatives. Even after Gurpreet’s imprisonment, Devinder is believed to have continued gathering intelligence and facilitating its transfer to Pakistan.

“According to the Punjab Police, the accused has been identified as Devinder Singh, a resident of Nihalgarh village in Sangrur district.”

Following his arrest, Devinder was presented before a Mohali court on July 15, which granted the police six days of remand to interrogate him further. The aim is to determine the scope of the security breach, identify possible collaborators, and trace the flow of information. The probe, led by AIG Ravjot Kaur Grewal, also includes a forensic audit of Devinder’s digital devices and financial records.

Authorities suspect a wider espionage network may be operating, and additional arrests are expected in the coming days.

Devinder’s case is part of a larger crackdown on ISI-linked spy rings in the aftermath of the April 22, 2025, terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Since then, at least 19 individuals have been arrested across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and other states.

Officials warn that the ISI has adopted a broad recruitment strategy, targeting not only serving soldiers but also students and social media personalities—often through online grooming, cash inducements, or personal contact during visits to Pakistan.
