Archery World Cup final: Deepika Kumari wins silver medal in women’s individual recurve event

Deepika Kumari won a silver medal in the women’s individual recurve event as India finished the 2024 Archery World Cup Final in Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl, Mexico with only one medal on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Kumari lost by 0-6 in straight sets to China’s Li Jiaman in the gold medal match.

Deepika defeated Valencia in semis and Yang Xiaolei in quarters

Ranked third out of eight archers, Kumari defeated Alejandra Valencia of Mexico 6-4 in the semi-finals and Yang Xiaolei of China 6-0 in the quarter-finals.

The podium finish was the sixth career medal for Kumari at the World Cup Final. In the season finale, she had already earned four silver medals and one bronze.

Dola Banerjee, in women’s recurve, is the only Indian to have won a gold medal at the World Cup Final – a feat she achieved back in 2007 in Dubai.

India’s Dhiraj Bommadevara gets defeated by South Korea’s Lee Woo Seok in first round

Among other athletes in the competition at Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl, Dhiraj Bommadevara, was defeated 4-6 by 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medallist Lee Woo Seok of South Korea in the first round, leading to an early elimination.

At one point, Bommadevara was leading by 4-2 but failed to sustain his momentum as Lee won two sets in a row to knock him out of the competition.

In a different area of the men’s compound, Priyansh from India was eliminated in the first round after being defeated by fellow Indian Prathamesh Fuge.
Despite achieving a flawless score of 150, Fuge was defeated by Mathias Fullerton from Denmark in the semi-finals. In a shoot-off to reach the final, the Danish archer landed a shot near the center. Fuge never bounced back from the blow and ultimately lost to Mike Schloesser in the bronze medal match with a score of 146-150.
