No relief for Arvind Kejriwal; Delhi Court stays order

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will have to return to Tihar Jail tomorrow (June 2), as a local court on Saturday reserved a ruling on his interim bail application for June 5 in connection with his detention in an alleged money laundering case related to the now-scrapped liquor policy case.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has petitioned the court for temporary bail for one week on medical grounds.

The Chief Minister’s counsel informed the court that Arvind Kejriwal is ill and requires treatment.

ED opposes Kejriwal’s application

However, the Enforcement Directorate opposed his application, alleging that the AAP chief concealed facts and made misleading representations, especially concerning his health.

The investigating agency further stated that Arvind Kejriwal will be brought to the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) or another hospital if any medical tests are required.

The Supreme Court granted Arvind Kejriwal interim bail to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, which finishes on June 1. He must surrender to Tihar Jail authorities on June 2 (Sunday).

The AAP chief moved the Delhi court after the Supreme Court registry failed to expedite his request for a seven-day extension of interim bail for medical testing. The judge stated that because Arvind Kejriwal can obtain regular bail from the trial court, his plea is not maintainable.

Kejriwal requested an extension of his interim bail in order to undertake multiple medical tests, including a PET-CT scan, due to “sudden and unexplained weight loss along with high ketone levels”. These symptoms, he explained, might signal kidney problems, significant cardiac diseases, or even malignancy.

Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by ED in Liquor Policy Case

After months of speculation, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) detained Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on March 21 in a money laundering case involving the suspected liquor policy scam.

Kejriwal was arrested at his apartment amid tight security hours after the Delhi High Court denied him interim protection from the Central agency’s coercive action and scheduled a hearing for April 22.

The arrests has been interpreted as part of a broader crackdown on opposition leaders by Central agencies. According to the opposition parties, 95% of the cases registered by Central probe agencies since 2014—when the BJP took control at the Centre—are against their politicians.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
