Suu Kyi’s son says she faces serious heart issues. NUG demands international pressure on Myanmar junta to allow medical care and secure her release.

September 10, 2025: The National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar has raised alarm over the deteriorating health of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains in the custody of the country’s military junta. In a statement released on Monday, September 8, the NUG expressed “grave concern” that the 79-year-old Nobel laureate is suffering from a serious heart condition while being denied access to necessary medical treatment.
According to her son, Ko Htein Lin (also known as Kim Aris), Suu Kyi’s condition has worsened in recent weeks, requiring urgent medical attention. The NUG alleged that the junta’s refusal to provide adequate care is a “politically motivated threat” to her life, holding the military fully responsible for any consequences that may follow.
Suu Kyi has been detained since the February 2021 coup, which saw the military overthrow her democratically elected government. Over the past four years, she has faced a series of secretive trials, convictions, and heavy sentences on charges widely seen as politically driven. International rights groups and governments have repeatedly condemned her imprisonment, warning that the conditions of her detention are inhumane.

The NUG called on the United Nations, ASEAN, neighboring countries, and the wider international community to take “immediate and effective action” to pressure the junta into securing Suu Kyi’s release, alongside other political prisoners. It urged that international intervention is essential not only to safeguard her life but also to uphold the aspirations of the people of Myanmar, who continue to resist military rule.

Political observers note that Suu Kyi’s health has long been a sensitive subject in Myanmar’s struggle between democratic forces and military rulers. Her failing health could galvanize further unrest, while the junta’s intransigence may deepen its isolation on the global stage.
The statement from the NUG underscores the urgent humanitarian and political stakes: “A community cannot remain silent while its leaders are denied the most basic human rights. The terrorist military must bear full responsibility for any consequences.”
For now, the world watches closely as pressure mounts on the junta to respond to international calls for compassion and accountability in the treatment of Myanmar’s most prominent political prisoner.
