Under construction building collapses in northern Bengaluru; 5 die, 2-3 still trapped under debris

Five individuals lost their lives, while 13 others were saved following the collapse of a building under construction in northern Bengaluru on Tuesday evening. Authorities are worried that there may be two or three individuals still trapped beneath the debris.

Rescue operations are still underway.

The incident occurred in Babusapalya, a region within Hennur in the city, during a period of intense rainfall. Nevertheless, reports indicated that the reason for the building’s downfall was not the precipitation, but rather the use of low-quality materials and inadequate construction methods.

CCTV captured the incident of building falling

CCTV footage documented the instance when the seven-story building crumbled. Sources also mentioned that the building was only approved for four stories, and that construction infractions occurred.

Sources say the building’s pillar rods were supposed to be 28-30 mm thick, but were actually used at 18-20 mm thickness. In different areas, like for shaping, there was a chance that rods of 8-10 mm thickness were used instead of the required 14-16 mm thickness.

They also mentioned the possibility of using insufficient cement and excess sand in the building process.

Officials stated that four injured individuals were transported to Bengaluru North hospital, while five others were transferred to Hosmat hospital in the city.

Two rescue vehicles from the fire and emergency services were sent out for the rescue mission. “A senior police officer stated that the rescue operation is being conducted with assistance from other agencies in a coordinated manner.”

Ahmed, one of the first individuals rescued, stated that there were 20 workers, such as tile workers, concrete workers, and plumbers, inside the building when it collapsed. It is reported that Ahmed was hired to do tile work in the building. He alleged that the basement was weak, which may have contributed to the collapse.

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar reacts to the incident

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reacted to the incident and said that a total of 21 labourers were present inside the building at the time of the incident.

“As per the information I got, 21 labourers were here. A 26-year-old Arman’s body was recovered. In a day, 26 people work here”, he was quoted as saying by ANI.

He also informed the news agency that the site was the scene of unlawful activity and that he would take strong measures against the owner and other participants.
