Despite Musk’s unpopularity rising among voters, his role in shaping federal policies under the Trump administration continues to expand, sparking debates nationwide.

A recent Wall Street Journal (WSJ) poll, conducted between January 9 and 14 among 750 registered voters, has highlighted a concerning trend for Tesla CEO and tech magnate Elon Musk—his popularity is on a downward trajectory. The poll, which has a margin of error of ±2.5%, found that half of the respondents disapprove of Musk’s decision to take on a prominent role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump’s administration. This marks a significant shift in public sentiment, as only 39% of respondents viewed his role positively.

The Shift in Public Perception

Before the presidential election, Elon Musk enjoyed higher favorability, particularly among the general electorate. His reputation as a visionary entrepreneur, pioneering advancements in electric vehicles and space exploration, resonated with a wide audience. However, his alignment with the Trump administration and his active involvement in federal government decision-making have polarized public opinion.

The WSJ poll underscores this shift: Republicans remain largely supportive of Trump’s cabinet appointments and his handling of the presidential transition, but overall voter sentiment is far more divided. As of now, 46% approve of Trump’s nominations and transition efforts, while 47% disapprove. Musk’s role as an adviser on federal spending cuts and other policy matters has added to this polarization.

Key Factors Behind Musk’s Declining Popularity

  1. Political Polarization: Musk’s involvement in a politically charged role has alienated portions of his fan base, particularly those who admired his apolitical focus on innovation and sustainability. Serving as an adviser in Trump’s administration—an administration criticized for its controversial policies—has positioned Musk as a divisive figure.
  2. Concerns Over DOGE Leadership: As co-chief, and now sole chief, of DOGE following Vivek Ramaswamy’s departure, Musk has taken on a more prominent role in overseeing federal spending efficiency. While some see this as an opportunity for government reform, others view it as a potential overreach of corporate influence into public policy. The WSJ poll shows this sentiment clearly, with a substantial portion of voters expressing skepticism about Musk’s dual role as a private-sector leader and government adviser.
  3. Access to Power: Reports of Musk’s close proximity to the Trump administration, including being granted a White House email ID, office space near Trump, and a badge for the White House complex, have raised eyebrows. His move from working out of SpaceX offices to securing a spot in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building—while not in the West Wing proper—has fueled criticism about potential conflicts of interest and his apparent eagerness to consolidate influence in the MAGA inner circle.

Broader Implications

The WSJ poll also sheds light on broader public attitudes. By a margin of 64% to 31%, voters oppose ending birthright citizenship—a constitutional provision that President Trump has moved to eliminate. This policy shift, among others, has created a contentious political environment that inevitably impacts figures like Musk who align themselves with the administration.

While Musk’s leadership in DOGE has garnered support from Trump’s Republican base, his association with controversial decisions and policies has alienated moderate and liberal voters. For someone who once symbolized progress and innovation, this perceived politicization of his role marks a turning point in public perception.

Musk’s Growing Influence Amid Decline

Despite his waning popularity, Musk’s influence within the Trump administration appears to be growing. As the sole chief of DOGE, he now wields significant authority over federal efficiency measures. His reported interest in expanding his access and influence within the White House—asking about his level of access and signaling a desire to be closer to Trump—reflects his ambition to shape government operations.

The NYT reports that Musk’s operational style has already made waves, with DOGE set to establish a formal office within the White House complex. This move not only solidifies his role but also underscores the blurring lines between his private-sector persona and his government responsibilities.

Elon Musk’s trajectory as a public figure is at a crossroads. While his position in the Trump administration elevates his influence, it also comes with the risk of further alienating key demographics who once admired his innovative spirit. Whether he can balance his corporate achievements with his political ambitions remains to be seen, but for now, the Tesla CEO’s journey in the public eye has taken a sharp turn into uncharted territory.
