Hailing from a tiny village in Bihar, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is rapidly becoming one of India’s most promising cricket talents.
At just 13, Vaibhav Suryavanshi captured attention during the mega auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 by being the youngest cricketer ever shortlisted for an IPL auction. He was ultimately contracted by the Rajasthan Royals for the IPL 2025 season.
Indeed, prior to the IPL 2025 auction, Rajasthan Royals invited Vaibhav for trials in Nagpur, where the young player shone. With his talent on display, it sparked a bidding rivalry between the Royals and Delhi Capitals at the auction, ultimately earning the teenager an impressive INR 1.1 crore.
“Vikram Rathour sir (batting coach) gave a match situation where he had to score 17 in an over,” his father Sanjeev told PTI. “He smashed three sixes. At trials, he hit eight sixes and four fours!”
Vaibhav’s sensational journey
Vaibhav Suryavanshi was born on March 27, 2011, in the village of Tajpur in Bihar. His cricketing journey started at the age of four when his father, who works as a farmer, observed his son’s enthusiasm for cricket and chose to nurture it by creating a small playing space for him in their home’s backyard. In reality, his father sold their farm in Motipur to support his son’s aspirations in cricket.
When Vaibhav reached the age of nine, Sanjeev registered him in a cricket academy located in the nearby town of Samastipur.
Vaibhav was later selected for the India B U-19 team for an Under-19 quadrangular series in Mulapadu, Andhra Pradesh, in November 2023.
The tournament included an India A team along with U-19 squads from Bangladesh and England, serving primarily as a selection event for the Indian team for the ICC U-19 World Cup 2024.
Vaibhav made his first-class debut in Bihar’s Ranji Trophy 2023-24 Elite Group B match against a formidable Mumbai team in Patna in January 2024.
At only 12 years and 284 days old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest Indian to debut in first-class cricket since 1986 and the second-youngest player ever in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar.
