Ukraine extended its military reach into Russian territory early Saturday, with drone strikes targeting the city of Kazan in the Tatarstan region, over 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) from the front line.
According to Tatarstan’s governor, Rustam Minnikhanov, eight drones were involved in the attack. Six struck residential buildings, one hit an industrial facility, and another was intercepted over a river. Emergency services responded swiftly, evacuating residents from affected buildings. Authorities reported no casualties.

A video verified by The Associated Press and shared on local Telegram channel Astra showed a drone hitting the upper floors of a high-rise building. As a precaution, flights at Kazan’s airport were suspended, and all public events scheduled for the weekend were canceled.
While Ukraine has not claimed responsibility, consistent with its security policy, the strike follows a Friday attack in Russia’s Kursk region, where U.S.-supplied missiles reportedly killed six people, including a child.
Escalation on Both Sides
In response, Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine, deploying 113 drones. Ukrainian officials stated that 57 of the drones were intercepted, while 56 were likely disrupted through electronic jamming.
In Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, drone attacks late Friday night wounded eight people in the regional capital, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov.
The conflict continues to escalate, with both sides demonstrating their capacity for long-range strikes, pushing the war into new territories and intensifying the already volatile situation.
