Greenland’s political leaders have rejected US pressure, insisting that the future of the Danish autonomous territory must be decided by Greenlanders themselves.

January 11, 2026: US President Donald Trump has reportedly instructed senior special forces commanders to begin drawing up contingency plans for a possible invasion of Greenland, according to a report by the Daily Mail. However, the move has allegedly met with strong resistance from top US military leadership, who have raised concerns over its legality and political viability.

The report said Trump asked the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to prepare an invasion blueprint, but the proposal has faced pushback from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Senior military officials are said to believe that any such operation would be unlawful and lack congressional authorisation.

“The generals think Trump’s Greenland plan is crazy and illegal. So they are trying to deflect him with other major military operations. They say it’s like dealing with a five-year-old,” a diplomatic source was quoted as saying. According to the report, military leaders have attempted to divert the president’s attention by discussing less controversial options, such as intercepting Russian “ghost ships” used to evade sanctions or considering military action against Iran.

Sources told the Daily Mail that hardline figures within Trump’s inner circle, particularly policy hawks led by adviser Stephen Miller, have become emboldened following what they view as the successful capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. They are now pressing for swift action to secure Greenland before Russia or China expand their influence in the Arctic.

The report also suggested that Trump’s renewed focus on Greenland may be linked to domestic politics, with mid-term elections approaching and concerns growing that Republicans could lose control of Congress. A dramatic foreign policy move, it said, could be aimed at shifting attention away from economic challenges at home.

Any attempt to seize Greenland would put the US on a collision course with European allies and could trigger a severe crisis within NATO. Diplomatic officials have reportedly conducted internal war-gaming exercises examining an “escalatory scenario” in which Trump could use military force or sustained pressure to weaken Greenland’s ties with Denmark. A classified cable reportedly warned of a worst-case outcome that could lead to “the destruction of NATO from the inside.”

Meanwhile, Greenland’s political parties have issued a joint statement rejecting US pressure. “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders,” leaders of five parliamentary parties said, stressing that Greenland’s future must be decided by its own people.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the US must act to prevent Russia or China from gaining a foothold in Greenland, warning that Washington would do “something” — “the easy way or the hard way” — if necessary. Denmark, however, has firmly rejected these claims, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen calling them unacceptable, amid reports that Danish forces have been placed on heightened alert.
