Mohamad Safa stepped down from his UN-linked role, claiming powerful interests within the system are pushing toward dangerous escalation in Iran. In a strongly worded statement, Safa warned of “nuclear winter” risks and urged global protests to prevent what he described as a looming humanitarian catastrophe.

New Delhi: March 30, 2026– A former diplomat at the United Nations has resigned, claiming the global body may be preparing for a scenario involving the possible use of nuclear weapons in Iran. Mohamad Safa made the announcement in a post on X, along with a letter outlining his reasons.
Safa served as the main representative of Patriotic Vision (PVA), an international organisation with special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council. He had been with the organisation since 2013 and was appointed its permanent representative to the UN in 2016.
In his statement, Safa said his decision came after “much reflection,” alleging that some senior UN officials were acting in the interests of a powerful lobby rather than the institution itself.
I don’t think people understand the gravity of the situation as the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran.
This is a picture of Tehran. For you uneducated, untraveled, never-served, warhawks licking your chops at the thought of bombing it. It’s not some low… pic.twitter.com/BnzB4F3001

“I don’t think people understand the gravity of the situation as the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran,” he wrote, sharing an image of Tehran. He stressed that the city, with a population of nearly 10 million, is home to ordinary families, warning against the human cost of any military escalation.

Safa said he chose to step down in order to speak out, adding that he did not want to be complicit in what he described as a potential “crime against humanity.” He also warned of the risk of a “nuclear winter” if tensions spiral further.
Referring to recent “No Kings” protests in the United States, he urged people worldwide to take to the streets and raise awareness. “Only the people can stop it. History will remember us,” he said.
He added that he had considered resigning as early as 2023 but delayed the move. Safa pointed to ongoing global conflicts and claimed that some within the UN were reluctant to hold countries such as Israel and the United States accountable for alleged violations of international law.
Safa also said he faced criticism after expressing concerns following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which triggered a prolonged conflict.
He further alleged that he had been sidelined, censored by senior officials, and had received death threats targeting him and his family.
The United Nations has not commented on the allegations.
