On August 9, 2025, Amit Jani, producer of ‘Udaipur Files’, took to X (formerly Twitter) stating that he received multiple threatening calls from an unknown number.
The caller, introducing himself as Tabrez from Bihar, allegedly threatened to kill Jani—either by bombing him or shooting him—while also using abusive language. Jani has formally requested authorities to register a case and arrest the individual.
“From the number +971566707310, I have been receiving continuous threats today to blow me up with a bomb, to shoot me, along with abuses. The person claims to be from Bihar and has given his name as Tabrez. A case should be registered against him and he should be arrested,” Jani quoted the caller’s threats in Hindi.
Movie based on 2022 Kanhaiya Lal killing
The movie ‘Udaipur Files’ centers around the 2022 killing of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was murdered in daylight for supposedly backing former BJP figure Nupur Sharma.
The horrific act, documented and shared online by the perpetrator, ignited widespread anger and reopened discussions on radicalisation. Mohammad Riaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, indicted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, are presently undergoing trial in a special NIA court located in Jaipur. The National Investigation Agency took over the case from Rajasthan Police during the preliminary investigation.

The film was released on August 8, 2025, after repeated delays due to censorship and legal challenges. The Delhi High Court had initially stayed the release, but it was later cleared.
Security Measures
After the threats, the Centre provided Jani with ‘Y’-category security, consisting of an 8 to 11-member team, to ensure his safety in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The action follows the Supreme Court granting him permission to request police protection.
The Supreme Court had allowed him to approach police authorities for protection. Following assessment, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved the security cover.
