April 7, 2026 — Amid rising tensions following a deadly bomb attack, the Government of Manipur on Tuesday ordered a three-day suspension of internet services across five valley districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur—to curb the spread of rumours and prevent further escalation.
The order, issued by the Home Department and signed by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, directs the suspension of mobile data, broadband, VSAT, and VPN services from 2:00 PM on April 7 until 2:00 PM on April 10, 2026. Authorities said the move was necessary as anti-social elements could misuse platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and X to incite unrest, violence, or vandalism.
The government action comes hours after a projectile attack in Tronglaobi village killed two young children and injured their mother, triggering widespread anger. The situation further deteriorated when protesters torched at least three petroleum trucks at the Moirang Oil Pump Station and blocked key roads.

In a strongly worded statement, the Kuki-Zo Council condemned both the bomb attack and the destruction of essential supplies. Calling the killing of children “inhumane,” the council expressed deep sorrow over the incident while also denouncing the burning of trucks meant to supply fuel to Churachandpur, describing it as “unjustifiable” and harmful to civilians.
The council firmly rejected allegations linking the Kuki-Zo community to the attack, stating that heavily guarded buffer zones between hill and valley areas make such infiltration “highly implausible.” It said the community has consistently respected these zones and does not support violence against civilians, particularly women and children.
“The Kuki-Zo people have never condoned such acts, which are against our values and traditions,” the statement said, adding that attempts to blame the community without evidence risk deepening divisions.
The council also warned that the incidents could be part of a broader attempt to reignite ethnic tensions in Manipur, urging both the media and the public to verify information and avoid spreading unconfirmed claims.
Officials said the internet shutdown order was issued on an urgent basis and will be enforced immediately, with strict legal action for any violations. Service providers across the state have been directed to comply without delay.
The developments highlight the fragile security situation in Manipur, where ethnic tensions have persisted since 2023, and underline the challenges authorities face in maintaining peace amid recurring violence.
