July 31, 2025: In the first case, Ashem Tarunakumari, Additional Sessions Judge of the Fast Track Court for Crimes Against Women, sentenced 45-year-old Shanglakpam Bishorjit Sharma, alias Bedha, to eight years of rigorous imprisonment. Bishorjit, a resident of Lamshang Mayai Leikai in Imphal West district, was convicted under Sections 376 (rape) and 354 (assault with intent to outrage modesty) of the Indian Penal Code for sexually assaulting a woman on August 21 and September 15, 2009, within the jurisdiction of Lamshang Police Station.
The convict was produced before the court from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, for sentencing. Along with the prison term, the court also recommended a compensation of ₹4 lakh to be paid to the survivor.
In the second case, RK Memcha, Judge of the Fast Special Court, sentenced Md Abdul Rahaman (37) to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Rahaman, a resident of Bishnupur district, was found guilty of sexually assaulting and wrongfully confining a minor girl on November 15, 2013, in an area under Moirang Police Station.

According to the prosecution, Rahaman had lured the minor into his pan shop, sexually assaulted her, and later abandoned her near a cemetery. He was also produced from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, for the sentencing hearing.
Special Public Prosecutor A Nilchandra argued for the maximum punishment, calling the crime “heinous” and lacking in any sign of remorse or humanity. In contrast, the defense counsel appealed for leniency, citing the convict’s family responsibilities, including four children and an ailing father, and his work as a daily labourer.
The court, however, imposed a 10-year sentence and a fine of ₹1 lakh on Rahaman. In case of non-payment of the fine, he will face an additional one-month simple imprisonment. The court further directed the State to provide ₹4 lakh in compensation to the victim within a month.
