Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US leader Donald Trump on Wednesday during the NATO summit in The Hague. After the meeting, Zelenskyy posted on X regarding a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and additional significant matters.
“I had a long and substantive meeting with President Trump. We covered all the truly important issues. I thank Mr. President, I thank the United States. We discussed how to achieve a ceasefire and a real peace. We spoke about how to protect our people. We appreciate the attention and the readiness to help bring peace closer,” he wrote.
The meeting was arranged following the Alliance’s plenary session, emphasizing the significance of talking about bilateral relations between Ukraine and the United States.
‘Zelenskyy’s a nice guy’
During a press briefing in The Hague earlier, Trump was questioned about what he intended to cover in his upcoming meeting with Zelenskyy.
“Zelenskyy’s a nice guy. I’m meeting him today. I don’t know, I assume we’re going to be discussing Ukraine. That seems the most likely,” he stated.

Talking to reporters, Trump emphasized that the primary focus of their conversation would be the “clear” matters needing attention.
Bitter confrontation at White House
In February of this year, Trump had a bitter confrontation with Zelenskyy during their initial in-person meeting at the White House. Since that time, Zelenskyy has made efforts to repair the relationship. The couple had a short meeting at the Vatican in April.
Recently, Zelensky and his team have urged allies to increase pressure on Russia as it deploys an unprecedented number of drones against Ukrainian cities.
Trump and the United States’ peace initiatives have yet to achieve a breakthrough, as Russia has dismissed requests for an unconditional ceasefire.
