Trump told lawmakers that the conflict between India and Pakistan could have spiraled into a nuclear war, claiming his actions helped prevent catastrophic loss of life and secured a ceasefire.

February 25, 2026: US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that his intervention prevented a catastrophic nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan, saying Pakistan’s Prime Minister personally told him that millions of lives were saved because of his actions. The remarks, made during his 2026 State of the Union address, come despite repeated denials from New Delhi that any foreign mediation played a role in ending the crisis.

Addressing a joint session of Congress, Trump highlighted what he described as a major foreign policy achievement during his current term. “In my first 10 months, I ended eight wars… Pakistan and India would have had a nuclear war,” he said. He further claimed that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told him that as many as 35 million people could have died without his involvement.

Trump has repeated similar claims multiple times since the May 2025 escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, portraying himself as the central figure in securing a ceasefire and preventing a wider catastrophe.

Crisis Triggered by Terror Attack and Military Response

The confrontation began after a deadly terrorist attack in April 2025 in Pahalgam, in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians. India blamed Pakistan-based militant groups and described the attack as an act of war.

In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting what it said were terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Indian officials described the strikes as precise and limited, aimed solely at militant facilities rather than civilian or military targets.

Pakistan condemned the operation as an act of aggression and retaliated, triggering four days of intense military exchanges involving airstrikes, drones, and missile systems. Both sides reported casualties and military losses, making it one of the most serious confrontations between the two countries in decades.

Ceasefire Achieved Through Direct Military Contacts

By May 10, both countries agreed to halt hostilities following direct communication between their military leadership. Indian authorities have consistently maintained that the ceasefire was achieved through bilateral military channels and not external intervention.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s Ministry of External Affairs have firmly rejected Trump’s claims of mediation, emphasizing India’s long-standing policy of resolving such matters independently.

Despite this, Trump has continued to present himself as a decisive mediator, sometimes suggesting that economic pressure and the threat of trade penalties helped push both sides toward de-escalation.

Claims Remain Disputed Amid Strategic Sensitivities

Trump’s repeated assertions have sparked debate among analysts and policymakers, with some warning that such claims could complicate diplomatic dynamics in South Asia, where India remains sensitive to suggestions of third-party involvement.

While Trump has made ending global conflicts a key part of his political narrative, India has underscored that its military and diplomatic decisions during the crisis were guided solely by national interests and direct engagement with Pakistan.

The episode remains a significant moment in regional security, highlighting both the risks of escalation between nuclear-armed neighbors and the competing narratives surrounding how the crisis was ultimately resolved.
