Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has sparked new controversy and faced fierce criticism from the ruling DMK government after urging students at an engineering college in Madurai to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram‘ during an event.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Ravi, serving as the chief guest, was speaking at a gathering at Thiagarajar Engineering College in Madurai. A video of the occasion, which has since become popular on social media, depicts the Governor urging students to chant the religious slogan.
In the video, Governor Ravi can be heard stating, “Let us pay tribute to Lord Shri Ram.” I say, and you say — Jai Shri Ram,” to which the students chant the slogan.
The action has received intense criticism from the governing MK Stalin-led administration, with the party alleging that Ravi is acting like an “RSS ideologue”.
“This goes against the secular values of the country. Why does the Governor time and again wants to violate the Constitution. Why has he not resigned yet? He is an RSS spokesperson. We know how he violated the federal tenets of the Country and how Supreme Court has shown him his place,” DMK spokesperson Dharanidharan said.

Dharanidharan also mentioned that this was not the first instance of Governor Ravi behaving controversially. “The Governor has repeatedly tried to destroy Tamil Nadu’s heritage and traditions. He is behaving like an RSS ideologue,” he remarked.
Ravi’s most recent controversy comes only days after suffered loss in the Supreme Court. On 8 April, the top court determined that the Governor’s choice to deny approval to ten crucial Bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly since 2020 was deemed “illegal” and “arbitrary.”
The court declared that the Governor’s actions concerning these Bills were invalid and stated that the Bills are considered to have become law from the date the Assembly re-submitted them to the Governor.
