‘Aaj Kush Toh Bahot Honge Tum’, ‘Mere Paas Paisa Hai, Bangla Hai, Gaadi Hai, Naukar Hai, Bank Balance Hai, aur Tumhare Paas Kya Hai?’, ‘Mere Paas Maa Hai…’; these iconic dialogues belong to the Amitabh Bachchan-Shashi Kapoor starrer ‘Deewar’ released on 24 January 1975. The screenplay of the movie was written by Salim-Javed, with direction by Yash Chopra.
Today, the movie completes 50 years of its release on silver screen, and legendary Javed Akhtar posted on X, “Deewaar was released on 21st January 1975 . Theek pachaas saal pehle . How time passes so quietly and so quickly. It is happening all the time but remains a wonder !!”
“Deewaar” centered around two impoverished siblings fighting to make ends meet in the slums of Mumbai. As they grow up, the older brother Vijay gets involved in crime, while the younger brother Ravi becomes a law-abiding police officer.

In the Amazon Prime Video documentary series “Angry Young Men”, released last year, Akhtar discussed the difficulties they faced in finalizing the film’s climax, despite having an excellent script.
Many believe that ‘Deewaar’ features an impeccable screenplay. We composed it in 18 days based on a brief plot. “After that, I completed the dialogue in roughly 20 days,” stated Akhtar.
But they were yet to nail ‘the end’, said Khan.
Salim-Javed, who helped create the ‘Angry Young Man’ phenomenon alongside Bachchan’s Vijay in the 1973 film “Zanjeer”, are noted by film historians and analysts for capturing the nation’s sentiment through films that highlighted the profound disillusionment among the populace.
