The gang rape of a law student in Visakhapatnam is yet another grim reminder of the frequent molestation and assault cases in India. Despite the prevalence of such incidents, many victims face threats and intimidation, with some even driven to suicide attempts

By PC Bureau

A law student in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, was gang-raped by her boyfriend and three others on August 13 this year. The horrific act was filmed by the accused, who then threatened the victim with the video. After enduring days of harassment, the survivor attempted suicide but was saved by her father.

The case came to light on Wednesday when the YSR Congress Party shared a post on X, tagging Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anitha Vangalapudi and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The post described the brutal assault, revealing that the victim was repeatedly threatened by the accused, and her suicide attempt was a result of the ongoing harassment. The party also criticized the government’s handling of the case.

Following the post, the Visakhapatnam City Police confirmed the arrests of the four accused—Batha Vamsi (27), Boddu Jagdish (27), Polipalli Anand (28), and Davulapalli Rajesh (23). Three of the accused were final-year LLB students and part-time workers, while the fourth was employed full-time. The survivor, also a final-year LLB student, had been in a year-long relationship with her boyfriend.

The incident occurred when the woman’s boyfriend lured her to a friend’s room, where the other three accused filmed the assault. The video was shared with Vamsi, who then joined in the harassment, threatening to leak the footage. The accused were arrested under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after the police complaint was filed.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
