January 24, 2026: The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has been “turned into a weapon to dismantle the constitutional right to vote.”

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the Election Commission was no longer acting as an impartial constitutional authority. “SIR has been turned into a weapon to destroy the principle of ‘one person, one vote’—so that it is not the people, but the BJP, that decides who remains in power,” he alleged. He further accused the poll body of becoming “the chief accomplice in this vote-theft conspiracy.”

Calling the exercise “well-planned, organised and strategic vote chori,” Gandhi said, “Wherever there is SIR, there is vote theft. What is being done in Gujarat in the name of SIR is not an administrative process.”

The Congress leader alleged that voters were being selectively removed from specific communities and polling booths perceived to support the Congress. “Wherever the BJP sees a potential defeat, voters are simply made to disappear from the system,” he claimed.

Gandhi said similar patterns had been witnessed earlier in other states. “The same thing happened in Aland, then in Rajura. Now the same blueprint is being implemented in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and every state where SIR has been imposed,” he said.

His remarks came amid allegations by the Gujarat Congress of large-scale irregularities during the SIR process in the state. In a post on X, the party claimed that after the Election Commission released the draft electoral roll and invited objections—with January 18 set as the deadline—only a limited number of objections were received until January 15. “The real game began afterward, when millions of objections (Form 7) were suddenly submitted under a conspiracy,” the state unit alleged.

The Gujarat Congress further claimed that when it sought details of these objections from the Election Commission, it received no response. “This is because the Election Commission has mortgaged both its responsibility and accountability to the ruling party,” the party alleged.

The Election Commission has not yet responded to the allegations.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
