The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Uttar Pradesh Police apprehended Zafar Ali, the president of Shahi Jama Masjid, related to the violence from last year over a court-mandated survey that resulted in four fatalities and several injuries.

The police stated that Ali was the first individual to obtain details about the survey. On November 19, it was claimed he was notified in advance about the survey, which resulted in a gathering of people, causing disturbances. Similarly, on November 24, he was once more among the initial individuals informed, and a large mob was assembled, ultimately leading to violence.

Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishan Kumar Bishnoi informed news agency PTI that the head of Shahi Jama Masjid has been detained regarding the case. Ali was subsequently taken to Chandausi for a medical assessment under tight security.

In response to the accusations, the Chief of Jama Masjid Sadar stated that he did not take part in the violence. “I did not provoke any violence…” he stated as reported by news agency ANI.

Earlier today, authorities announced that the head of the mosque committee was detained by the SIT for interrogation.

Ali’s brother, Advocate Mohammad Tahir, claimed that this was executed to stop him from presenting his testimony to a three-member judicial commission on Monday.

The Uttar Pradesh government has formed a panel to look into the communal violence that resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries.

Furthermore, the government has increased its presence in the area to maintain law and order.

The mosque from the Mughal era located here has been embroiled in a significant controversy after a petition asserted that it was the location of an ancient Hindu temple.

His arrest is connected to the same case where Sambhal MP Zia Ur Rahman Barq is also listed as an accused. According to the FIR filed in November 2024, Barq reportedly incited the mob to disturb communal peace for political benefits.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
