Renowned painter and poet Imroz, best known for his enduring relationship with the Punjabi poetess Amrita Pritam, passed away on Friday at the age of 97.

Imroz had been suffering from age-related issues and was hospitalised for a few days when his condition deteriorated. However, he was brought back home a few days ago and passed away on Friday, his relatives announced.

Born in 1926 in Punjab, originally named Inderjeet, Imroz met Amrita Pritam in the 1950s when she was already a well-established figure in Punjabi literature. A deep connection formed between them, and they lived together for over 40 years until Pritam’s death in 2005.

Imroz began his career with Pritam as an illustrator. His canvases frequently conveyed themes of human connections, love, and grief, which resonated with Pritam’s poems.

Imroz, whose real name was Inderjeet when she was born in Punjab in 1926, first got to know Amrita Pritam in the 1950s, when the latter was already well-known in the literary world of Punjab. They grew close to one another and shared a home for more over 40 years till Pritam passed away in 2005.

Imroz began his career with Pritam as an illustrator. His canvases frequently conveyed themes of human connections, love, and grief, which resonated with Pritam’s poems.
