Former election strategist Prashant Kishor, now a leader of Jan Suraaj, has sparked controversy by calling Bihar a “completely failed state” facing significant challenges, highlighting the urgent need for extensive efforts to improve the state’s condition.
Kishor commented while virtually engaging with the Bihari community in the USA following the launch of his party’s US chapter.
Although Jan Suraaj performed poorly in the recent Bihar Assembly bypolls, failing to secure any seats and losing deposits in all but one constituency, Kishor remained confident that his party would emerge victorious in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

He emphasized the harsh truth of Bihar’s difficulties, stating, “We need to understand that Bihar is facing significant challenges.” If Bihar was its own nation, it would rank as the eleventh most populous country globally. “We have recently surpassed Japan in terms of population.”
Kishor condemned the widespread despair in the society of Bihar, stating that it is caused by the constant fight for survival which hinders any aspirations for advancement.
“We must recognize that Bihar is a state which is in deep sh**. If Bihar was a nation, it would rank as the 11th most populous in the world. We have recently surpassed Japan in terms of population,” said Kishor.
Kishor remains optimistic
Although he gave a grim evaluation, Kishor remained optimistic by stating that Jan Suraaj’s work over the last two and a half years could lead to positive outcomes.
He stressed that it would take time and continuous effort to achieve concrete governance results. Kishor stated that the top priority for a Jan Suraaj government in 2025 would be to enhance school education.
He suggested financing this project by ending the alcohol ban across the state, stating that it was not working and hurting Bihar’s income.
