The Stage 3 anti-pollution measures of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) were lifted on Friday in the Delhi-NCR area after the city experienced better air quality due to heavy rainfall.
Delhi’s air pollution levels demonstrated a downward trend, with the 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) recorded at 324 by 7 pm.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) advised removing the restrictions after the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology forecasted additional improvement due to favorable meteorological conditions. The Stage 3 limitations were enforced on December 16.
The city and surrounding regions are anticipated to witness additional rainfall on Saturday and Sunday. Officials have stated that air quality is expected to stay within the lower range of the ‘very poor’ or ‘poor’ categories in the coming days.
GRAP-3 implemented a prohibition on non-essential construction and demolition work, the operation of industries and brick kilns using non-clean fuels, and the use of non-essential diesel generator sets. Moreover, diesel trucks transporting non-essential items in Delhi were prohibited, and the open burning of waste and biomass was restricted to reduce air pollution. Classes up to Class 5 needed to transition to hybrid mode during Stage 3.

“Considering the enhancing air quality and the potential effects of maintaining Stage-III restrictions, which greatly affect various stakeholders, the CAQM has decided to lift Stage-III measures immediately throughout NCR.” At the same time, protocols related to Stages II and I will remain in effect, observed, and improved. This is vital for averting additional decline in air quality,” The Commission stated.
Officials stated that the restrictions established in Stages 1 and 2 will continue to apply in the area.
