Robert Vadra, a businessman and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s husband, stated on Thursday that people of Amethi want him to contest from the constituency against Smriti Irani, the current Member of Parliament.
Smriti Irani had beaten Rahul Gandhi from the seat that had been a Gandhi bastion for decades, making Amethi a hot seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. In 2004, 2009, and 2014, Rahul Gandhi won the Amethi seat; nevertheless, the record was broken by Smriti Irani.
Raebarelli and Amethi candidates have not yet been announced by the Congress, although Rahul Gandhi has submitted his candidacy from Wayanad. This time, Raebareli gained importance in addition to Amethi since Sonia Gandhi, the current MP, transferred to the Rajya Sabha.
Robert Vadra to face Smriti Irani?
Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, has expressed his desire to contest elections from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency. In an interview, Robert Vadra has said that the people of Amethi want someone from the Gandhi family to contest elections here again.
He told that the people of Amethi even want that if he enters politics, he should contest elections from Amethi because the people of Amethi are feeling sorry for making Smriti Irani win. The people again want a member of the Gandhi family to win from here with huge margin.
Vadra’s attack on Smriti Irani
Robert Vadra attacked Smriti Irani and said that development in Amethi has lagged far behind. The people here are complaining because of her. He said that today the people there are thinking that the present MP keeps unnecessarily attacking the Nehru-Gandhi family without paying attention to the basic progress of Amethi. “Due to this, only politics is being done in the name of Amethi and not development. The people here seem very sad about this,” he added.
Robert Vadra also said that he has had a relationship with Amethi since 1999. “At that time I had participated in the campaign there with Priyanka. That was my beginning in politics,” he said. Robert Vadra also said that at that time the politics there was of a different nature. He said that Sanjay Singh was there then. “I remember during the campaign we used to put up posters all night long. Used to encourage the workers.”
Smriti became voter of Amethi
On Wednesday, Smriti Irani submitted an application to vote in Amethi after obtaining a permanent address within her constituency. Smriti Irani has registered to vote in booth 347 in the Amethi parliamentary constituency, which is located in Medan Mawai village of the Gauriganj assembly seat.
