July 31, 2025 — In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves through the state, a nurse working at AIIMS Patna and her two minor children were allegedly burnt alive inside their home in the early hours of Thursday in the city’s Janipur locality. Police suspect that the victims were deliberately trapped in the house and set ablaze, pointing towards a planned murder.
According to officials, the fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. when neighbors reported seeing flames and smoke billowing from the residence. Despite attempts to rescue the family, all three were found charred beyond recognition by the time fire services arrived.
“This is not an accident. It appears to be a case of premeditated murder and arson,” said SSP Rajeev Mishra, who visited the scene. Forensic teams have been deployed, and samples from the site have been collected. Police are also examining CCTV footage from nearby houses to identify suspects.

The victims have been identified as a staff nurse posted at AIIMS Patna and her two children, aged seven and ten. Her husband was reportedly not present at the time of the incident. Investigators are trying to trace his location and verify his statement.
The tragic deaths have triggered widespread outrage in the area. Residents held protests, blocked roads, and demanded swift justice. Many questioned the deteriorating law and order situation in the state capital. Political parties have also reacted sharply to the incident, blaming the government for failing to provide safety to citizens.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took to X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Criminals burnt a mother and her children alive in their own home. This is BJP-JD(U)’s ‘good governance’?” The Congress party also slammed the state’s ‘double-engine government’, accusing it of allowing criminals to act with impunity.

This is the second brutal incident in Patna involving women in the past two months. In June, a retired nurse and her daughter were murdered in Alamganj, raising serious concerns about the safety of women, even in secure residential neighborhoods.

AIIMS Patna issued a statement expressing grief over the death of their colleague, calling her “a dedicated professional and a loving mother.” The hospital has extended support to the bereaved family.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem at PMCH. Police said the findings will help confirm whether the victims were attacked before being burnt. A murder case has been registered, and the police have not ruled out forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) if required.
As grief-stricken residents and health workers mourn the loss, questions continue to mount over the state’s ability to tackle rising violent crimes, especially those targeting women and children. The government is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
