April 6, 2026: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday arrested a Manipur resident in connection with the हत्या of a police officer during the state’s ethnic violence in 2023.
The accused, Kamginthang Gangte, a resident of Zalenphai Part III in Moreh, Tengnoupal district, was arrested at around 4:45 pm at the NIA Special Court complex in Guwahati. He is alleged to be involved in the conspiracy and killing of Sub-Divisional Police Officer Chingtham Anandakumar Singh.
Charges under multiple laws
Gangte has been booked under several serious provisions, including murder, criminal conspiracy, and waging war against the government under the IPC, along with provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and the Foreigners Act.

The case (RC-02/2024/NIA/IMP) was registered on February 9, 2024.
According to the NIA, the killing of SDPO Singh took place on October 31, 2023, at the playground of Eastern Shine School in Moreh, a border town that witnessed intense violence during the ethnic clashes in Manipur.
The agency described the हत्या as a “terror act” that created widespread panic during the period of unrest. Investigators allege that Gangte played a key role in the conspiracy and maintained close contact with other suspects involved in the attack.
Investigation and arrest details
Officials said the arrest was necessary to uncover the larger conspiracy, identify other accused persons, and prevent destruction of evidence.
An arrest memo and related documents confirm that the grounds of arrest were explained to the accused in the presence of witnesses. A medical examination found no visible injuries, and no items were recovered during a personal search.
The NIA has also informed the accused’s family about the arrest and notified local police authorities in Tengnoupal district.
Gangte was produced before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati following his arrest.
The development marks a significant step in the agency’s ongoing probe into the high-profile killing of the SDPO amid Manipur’s prolonged ethnic conflict.
