Kyu Kyu Hla, the wife of Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing, has gained attention for her penchant for luxury, particularly when it comes to her extensive handbag collection. The exact number of handbags remains a mystery, but reports from Myanmar’s The Irrawaddy suggest she has been seen with at least 15 bags, collectively valued at around $275,000 (over 1 billion kyats). These figures are based on the estimated retail value of the designer pieces she’s been photographed carrying.
Kyu Kyu Hla’s love for high-end fashion is evident in her selection of bags from brands like Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Yves Saint Laurent. Among her prized possessions is a black Hermes crocodile skin tote, adorned with real gold, worth a staggering $77,500 (310 million kyats), which she flaunted during a visit to Shan State in 2023. Another notable item is a blue Hermes bag, valued at $34,200 (120 million kyats), which she carried while donating robes to monks in Rakhine State in 2023.

Her collection spans more than just handbags. Kyu Kyu Hla is also known for her expensive wristwatches and designer outfits, which she has worn since her husband took control of Myanmar’s military in 2011. Before the coup, she was seen with Louis Vuitton totes, including one from the Louis Vuitton Masters Collection by Jeff Koons, which cost $3,000, a price far beyond the reach of most in Myanmar, where the average annual income is significantly lower.
Kyu Kyu Hla’s rise from humble beginnings in Rakhine State to the heights of luxury has been tied to her family’s increasing wealth. Her children, Aung Pyae Sone and Khin Thiri Thet Mon, have become influential figures in Myanmar’s most profitable sectors, including telecom, energy, and construction. Experts suggest that Kyu Kyu Hla’s opulent lifestyle may be closely linked to her children’s growing business empire, which flourished under her husband’s military regime. In 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on Kyu Kyu Hla for her role in supporting the military junta.
