March 14, 2026: A missile struck the compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad early Saturday, hitting the embassy’s helipad inside the heavily fortified Green Zone, Iraqi security officials and witnesses said.
The strike occurred around 2:15 am local time, sending thick black smoke into the night sky and triggering emergency sirens across the diplomatic enclave.
An Iraqi security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the projectile appeared to be a drone or missile that directly hit the helipad area. A second security source confirmed the attack targeted the US diplomatic mission.
An eyewitness, including a journalist from Agence France-Presse present in Baghdad, reported flames rising from the impact site as US Marine guards moved quickly to secure the compound. No casualties were immediately reported.
Attack Follows Strike on Militia Group
The incident comes amid escalating regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Hours before the embassy strike, coalition forces reportedly carried out precision strikes on positions linked to Kataeb Hezbollah in Baghdad.
Security sources said a missile strike destroyed a building used by the militia group, killing two members, including a senior figure, while two others were wounded.
Officials believe the embassy attack may have been a retaliatory action by Iran-aligned militias operating in Iraq.

Damage to Helipad, No Casualties
Initial assessments indicated the missile impact left a crater on the embassy’s helipad and caused localized damage to infrastructure within the compound.
The helipad, used for logistical operations and emergency evacuations, was temporarily taken out of service.
US and Iraqi security teams launched a joint investigation to determine the origin of the projectile and whether it was launched by a drone unit or from a nearby location.

Missile Debris Falls in Dubai
The regional conflict also reverberated across the Gulf as debris from an intercepted missile struck a building in Dubai International Financial Centre in the United Arab Emirates.
Authorities said fragments from the interception hit the facade of a high-rise building in central Dubai.
The Dubai Media Office said the incident was caused by debris from a successful missile interception and had been fully contained. No injuries or fires were reported.
Residents described hearing a powerful explosion that shook nearby buildings.
“The ground shook. It was the loudest sound I’ve ever heard,” one resident told AFP.
This was the second incident in less than 24 hours in which intercepted missile debris landed in Dubai following regional air defence operations against incoming projectiles.
War Enters Third Week
The incidents come as the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran enters its third week, raising fears of further escalation across the Middle East.
Iran-backed militias in Iraq have repeatedly threatened US facilities in the country, while American forces have intensified strikes on militia networks accused of supporting Tehran.
Security analysts warn that attacks on diplomatic compounds and spillover incidents in Gulf cities highlight the growing regional impact of the conflict.
Investigations into the Baghdad strike were ongoing as of Saturday morning.
