Among those held is a senior PLA operative active since 1990, arrested in Guwahati with help from the Crime Branch.

September 27 — Security forces have arrested two cadres of the banned People’s Liberation Army (PLA) for their involvement in the September 19 ambush on 33 Assam Rifles personnel at Nambol Sabal Leikai in Bishnupur district.
The arrested men have been identified as Thongram Sadananda Singh alias Ngachik alias Purakpa (18), a resident of Wangbal Heiruthong Leikai in Thoubal district, and S/S Lt Corpl Chongtham Mahesh alias Momo alias Amo Singh (51), of Keishampat Leimajam Leikai in Imphal West.

Singh was formally arrested in Manipur, while Mahesh, a senior PLA operative associated with the outfit since 1990, was picked up from Guwahati with assistance from the city’s Crime Branch Police Station.

This comes just days after the apprehension of the prime accused in the case. On September 24, Manipur Police, working with 33 Assam Rifles and other security forces, arrested Khomdram Ojit Singh alias Keilai (47), son of late Kh. Mani Singh, from Awang Leikinthabi Awang Leikai. He was nabbed around 1 am in the Kameng area of Imphal West on the basis of specific intelligence inputs.

During interrogation, Ojit Singh admitted that he had broken away from the PLA but remained involved in militant activities. He confessed to taking part in the September 19 ambush, which targeted Assam Rifles personnel at around 5:30 pm before the attackers fled towards Loktak Lake.
Based on his disclosure, a massive cache of arms and ammunition was recovered. The haul included an A4 rifle with four magazines, an HK rifle with two magazines, two AK rifles with ten magazines, an INSAS rifle with three magazines, three lathe shell magazines, 170 rounds of AK ammunition, 216 rounds of M16 ammunition, 67 rounds of INSAS ammunition, along with a mobile phone, wallet, Aadhaar card and a can believed to have been used for concealing weapons.
