Restoring Normalcy: With renewed efforts to ensure free movement on roads and curb extortion, the government is taking concrete steps to revive Manipur’s economy and uphold law and order.

The Meitei Alliance has expressed strong support for the recent directives issued by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Governor of Manipur, aimed at restoring peace, security, and stability in the state. In an official statement, the alliance commended the central and state administrations for their decisive actions in addressing the ongoing crisis and reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding all citizens.
A key outcome of these efforts has been the voluntary return of arms by civilians who had previously taken up weapons for self-defense against threats posed by Kuki militant groups. The alliance noted that this development reflects renewed trust in the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the protection of all communities.
Key Government Initiatives Praised by the Meitei Alliance
The Meitei Alliance highlighted four major steps taken by the government that are expected to significantly contribute to peace and security in Manipur:
Dismantling the Drug Trade Network
The government’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking is seen as a crucial measure not only to protect the youth from addiction but also to cut off financial support to militant groups attempting to destabilize the region along ethnic lines.

Ensuring Free Movement on Roads
The directive to ensure unrestricted movement on all roads in Manipur from March 8, 2025, is a significant step toward restoring normalcy. The alliance believes this move will help revive the state’s economy and reinforce Manipur’s historical tradition of multi-ethnic coexistence.
Strict Action Against Extortion
The government’s commitment to taking stringent action against extortion is welcomed as a necessary measure to uphold the rule of law, protect citizens, and maintain open access to national highways.

Accelerating Border Fencing
The push to complete border fencing along key entry points on the Indo-Myanmar border is expected to enhance security, curb illegal immigration, and prevent arms and drug smuggling.
Call for a National Register of Citizens (NRC)
The Meitei Alliance also strongly advocated for the implementation of a robust National Register of Citizens (NRC) to identify and address the issue of illegal immigration, which it believes is contributing to demographic shifts that could threaten Manipur’s cultural heritage and social harmony.
Commitment to Peace and Dialogue
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, the Meitei Alliance emphasized the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation among all communities in Manipur. The alliance pledged to work closely with different ethnic groups to foster understanding and explore pathways toward lasting peace and unity in the state.
“We stand ready to support the government’s initiatives to ensure security, stability, and inclusivity in Manipur,” the alliance stated. “By working together, we can pave the way for a prosperous and harmonious future for all.”
