The Kuki Organisation For Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) has called on authorities to recover looted arms, prosecute perpetrators of ethnic violence, and respect the right of Kukis to defend themselves. The group warns that dismantling village bunkers could expose communities to further attacks.

The Kuki Organisation For Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) has issued a strong statement urging the Government of India to establish a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo community, arguing that coexistence with the Meitei majority has become untenable in the wake of ongoing violence and deep-seated divisions.
In its press release, KOHUR condemned the government’s focus on appointing a new Chief Minister instead of addressing the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded over the past 21 months. The organization claimed that every Meitei MLA has aligned with a “majoritarian agenda,” making it impossible for the Kuki-Zo minority to safely coexist.

The group also called for immediate action to recover looted arms from police armories and bring perpetrators of atrocities—including rape, beheadings, and the destruction of 350 churches and 7,000 homes—to justice. KOHUR further urged security forces to uphold human rights and warned against dismantling village bunkers in Kuki-inhabited areas, suggesting such actions could enable further attacks by Meitei militants.

KOHUR emphasized that both communities now recognize that lasting peace can only be achieved through separation. It urged the government to establish a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people “without delay” to prevent further ethnic violence. The statement concluded with a stark warning that any attempt to forcibly reintegrate the two groups would only lead to a more chaotic and irreversible division.
