Maharashtra Cabinet approves resolution urging Centre to confer ‘Bharat Ratna’ to Ratan Tata
As India grieves the recent death of its renowned businessman and philanthropist, Ratan Tata, demands for honoring him with the Bharat Ratna after his death, India’s top civilian award, have gained popularity.
Leaders across different political and business sectors have come together to push the government to consider the recognition. As a reaction, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved a resolution on October 10, urging the Centre to bestow the Bharat Ratna upon the ex-chairman of Tata Group.
Resolution to be sent to Centre for additional review
The resolution will be sent to the Central government for additional review.
Although Ratan Tata has made significant contributions to Indian industry and philanthropy, he has not been awarded the Bharat Ratna. Nonetheless, in 2000 he received the Padma Bhushan and in 2008 the Padma Vibhushan, both of which are among India’s top civilian honors.

Ratan Tata’s humble take on Bharat Ratna
In 2021, with his Bharat Ratna nomination campaign picking up steam, Ratan Tata modestly asked his followers to stop their efforts.
“While I appreciate the sentiments expressed by a section of social media regarding an award, I would humbly request that such campaigns be discontinued. Instead, I consider myself fortunate to be an Indian and to contribute to India’s growth and prosperity,” he shared on social media.
After his death, the campaign has reignited, with people across social media calling him “Bharat Ratan,” recognising his dedication to humanitarian causes.
