March 17, 2026: A leaked audio recording has revealed dramatic new details about how Mojtaba Khamenei narrowly survived a deadly US-Israeli missile strike on his residence in Tehran, stepping out into his garden just moments before the attack struck the compound.
The recording, obtained and independently verified by The Telegraph, features Mazaher Hosseini, head of protocol in the office of Ali Khamenei, recounting the events of February 28 to a closed-door gathering of senior clerics and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to Hosseini, Mojtaba Khamenei had stepped outside “to do something” shortly before the strike, when a barrage of missiles hit the heavily guarded leadership compound at approximately 9:32 am local time. The timing of his brief absence is believed to have saved his life.
Coordinated Strike on Leadership Compound
The audio suggests the attack was highly coordinated, with multiple missiles targeting different sections of the complex simultaneously. The compound included not only the residence of the supreme leader but also living quarters of family members, senior aides, and a religious hall used for official engagements.
Hosseini alleged that at least three missiles directly targeted the main residence, while additional strikes hit upper and lower residential floors occupied by Mojtaba Khamenei’s relatives. The scale and precision of the हमला, he claimed, indicated an attempt to eliminate the entire leadership structure in a single operation.
Heavy Casualties Among Leadership, Family
The strike reportedly killed several top figures within Iran’s political and military establishment. Among them was Mohammad Shirazi, a key aide responsible for coordinating between the supreme leader’s office and military command. Hosseini described the blast impact as so severe that only fragments of Shirazi’s remains could be recovered.
Mojtaba Khamenei’s immediate family also suffered significant losses. His wife and son were said to have been killed instantly when a missile struck their section of the residence. Another relative reportedly died in a separate impact, while other family members narrowly escaped as parts of the structure collapsed.

Despite the scale of destruction, Mojtaba Khamenei himself sustained only a minor injury to his leg, according to the leaked account.
Aftermath and Silence
Since the strike and his subsequent elevation following the death of Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared publicly. His only communication has been a written message broadcast on state television, fuelling speculation about his health and ability to govern.
Even senior Iranian officials are said to have limited information about his condition, with reports suggesting a tightly controlled flow of information within the leadership.

The strike is believed to be part of a broader escalation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, with Iran-aligned groups and state structures coming under sustained military pressure. The reported targeting of succession-linked figures has raised questions about the stability of Iran’s leadership and command hierarchy.
The leaked audio provides one of the most detailed insider accounts so far of the attack, though independent verification of all claims remains limited. If confirmed, the incident underscores the intensity of the ongoing conflict and the vulnerability of even the most heavily secured leadership sites in the region.
