New Delhi, October 14: A candlelight vigil will be held in Munirka, South Delhi, on Tuesday night to mourn and demand justice for Vincy Nengneithem Khongsai, a young woman from the Kuki community who was brutally murdered on October 12. The vigil, themed “She Lost Her Life at the Altar of Ethnicity,” aims to draw attention to violence against women and rising ethnic intolerance.
The event, organised jointly by the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) Delhi & NCR and the Kuki Zomi Women Forum Delhi (KZWFD), will take place from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Car Park, Munirka. Organisers said the gathering will be peaceful and symbolic, calling on the government to ensure justice and safety for women and minorities across India.
According to the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR), the 25-year-old victim, Vincy Nengneithem Khongsai, was killed by her live-in partner, Thangjam Viney Meitei, in their rented accommodation in Munirka. Police sources said her throat was slit, and the accused has been detained for questioning. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Describing the act as “inhumane and condemnable,” KWOHR has demanded a swift, transparent investigation and strict punishment for the accused. “This horrific killing is not only a gender crime but also exposes the growing fault lines of ethnic and communal mistrust,” the group said in a statement.
Leaders from the Kuki community have urged the Delhi Police to ensure that the investigation remains impartial and that justice is delivered without delay. They also appealed to civil society organisations and women’s rights groups to raise their voices against the increasing cases of gender-based and ethnically motivated violence.

“We are heartbroken. Vincy was young, ambitious, and full of life. Her death is a painful reminder that women, especially from minority communities, remain unsafe even in the capital,” said a KSO Delhi spokesperson.
Several student and community organisations are expected to participate in the vigil, where candles will be lit in Vincy’s memory, prayers offered, and calls for justice echoed. Activists say the gathering is not only a tribute to her but also a collective plea for social accountability and equality.
The organisers have urged Delhi residents to join the vigil and stand in solidarity with the victim’s family. The event will conclude with a moment of silence and the collective pledge:
“Justice for Vincy Nengneithem Khongsai. Stop Violence Against Women.”
