Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge triggered a political storm in Patna after declaring, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” during a speech targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP condemned the remark as a breach of political decorum, while Congress defended it as an idiomatic expression.

October 25 — Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge triggered a political controversy on Sunday after making a sharp personal remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a public event in Patna, prompting the BJP to accuse him of violating basic standards of political decency.

The incident occurred at a function marking the 139th birth anniversary of Shri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first chief minister. Kharge was speaking about alleged electoral fraud and claimed that Modi would “go to jail” when a voice from the audience interjected with a remark understood to mean that Modi would not leave power.

Kharge responded from the stage: “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Even his father will have to go). He repeated the remark three times, triggering an immediate political backlash.

The man who interrupted Kharge, identified as Santosh Kumar, was allegedly assaulted by Congress supporters and removed from the venue.

Speaking outside the hall, Kumar denied that he had heckled the Congress chief. He said his full remark had been, “Unless there is a revolt, Modi will not go,” but that only part of the sentence was audible inside the venue. He argued that his comment referred to what he described as a growing public revolt against Modi after nearly 12 years in office.

The BJP launched a sharp attack on Kharge. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a post on X, accused the Congress president of discarding all norms of political decorum and referred to earlier attacks by Congress leaders on Modi and his family.

BJP spokesperson Tuhin A. Sinha described Kharge’s remark as “disgusting, petulant, uncouth”, while Bihar BJP president Nitin Nabin accused the opposition of resorting to personal attacks because it lacked substantive arguments on development and governance.

Union minister Giriraj Singh also hit back, asserting that Modi would remain in power for years to come.

The Congress defended its president. Party spokesperson Surendra Rajput argued that Kharge had used an idiomatic expression and contended that Modi himself had made harsher remarks against political opponents in the past.

The controversy has added to the increasingly personal exchanges between the BJP and Congress, with both sides accusing the other of lowering political discourse. The reported assault on Kumar has also raised questions about the treatment of dissenting voices at political gatherings.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
