The Israel Defense Forces is facing mounting pressure as it juggles multiple operational fronts, with reserve forces stretched thin and calls growing for urgent reforms to conscription and extended service.

March 27, 2026 — Israel’s military chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, has warned that the Israel Defense Forces could face a serious breakdown under mounting operational pressure and worsening manpower shortages, according to reports from a high-level security cabinet meeting this week.
Zamir told ministers the army was nearing a critical point, raising what he described as multiple urgent concerns about force readiness. “I am raising red flags in front of you,” he was quoted as saying, cautioning that without immediate legislative action, the military’s ability to sustain both routine operations and wartime demands could erode rapidly.
He reportedly called for swift passage of new laws to expand conscription, regulate reserve duty, and extend mandatory military service, warning that the current system is under severe strain. “Before long, the IDF will not be ready for its routine missions, and the reserve system will not last,” he said.
The remarks have intensified political tensions, with opposition leaders accusing the government of failing to address the growing personnel crisis and urging broader recruitment, including among ultra-Orthodox communities. The Prime Minister’s Office, however, pointed to legal and procedural delays as the main obstacle to advancing the required legislation.

Senior commanders also highlighted the operational burden created by government policy in the West Bank. Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth, head of Central Command, reportedly told ministers that the expansion of settlements across the West Bank and the Jordan Valley has significantly increased the demand for security forces.

“This is your policy,” Bluth was quoted as saying, “but it requires a full protection package, because the reality on the ground has changed—and that requires manpower.”
Ministers were also shown footage of recent settler violence during the meeting, underscoring the deteriorating security environment. Attacks by extremist settlers have surged in recent months, particularly amid the broader regional conflict involving Iran.
The military has already begun diverting forces to cope with the strain. An infantry battalion originally slated for deployment to Lebanon was recently reassigned to the West Bank to respond to escalating violence, with officials warning that additional troop redeployments may be necessary.
The developments highlight the growing challenge facing Israel’s military leadership: managing simultaneous fronts while grappling with internal resource constraints that could, if unaddressed, undermine long-term operational readiness.
