March 8, 2026: As the war in the Middle East enters a dangerous new phase, Iran appears to be moving closer to resolving the leadership vacuum created by the killing of its long-time Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Senior clerics on Sunday confirmed that the country’s top religious body has reached a decision on who should succeed him, though the identity of the chosen candidate has not yet been made public.
The announcement comes at a moment of intense political and military pressure on Tehran, as the ongoing conflict with Israel and the United States continues to escalate. The death of Khamenei in joint US–Israeli strikes last week triggered retaliatory attacks by Iran across the region and raised urgent questions about who would assume the country’s highest political and religious office.
According to officials, the Assembly of Experts — the powerful council of clerics constitutionally responsible for appointing the supreme leader — has already reached a majority consensus on the next leader.
“The most suitable candidate, approved by the majority of the Assembly of Experts, has been determined,” said Mohsen Heydari, a member representing Khuzestan province, according to Iran’s ISNA news agency.

Another member of the body, Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, confirmed the development in a video statement carried by the Fars news agency, saying that “a firm opinion reflecting the majority view has been reached.”
Although officials have not revealed the name of the chosen candidate, the confirmation suggests that Iran’s clerical leadership is moving quickly to stabilise the country’s political system amid the wartime crisis.
Israel Warns It May Target Khamenei’s Successor
At the same time, Israel has issued an extraordinary warning suggesting that even Iran’s next supreme leader could become a military target.
The Israel Defense Forces said it would pursue not only the individual selected to succeed Khamenei but also those involved in the process of appointing the new leader.
The warning came as Iranian state media reported that the leadership transition process in Tehran was approaching its final stage.
“After the elimination of the tyrant Khamenei, the Iranian terrorist regime is attempting to regroup and choose a new Supreme Leader,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
“I want to emphasise that the long arm of the State of Israel will continue to pursue the successor and anyone who tries to appoint him,” the statement added.
Israeli officials also warned individuals participating in the meeting responsible for selecting the successor, signalling that the leadership transition itself could become a target in the ongoing conflict.
With the war still raging and both sides issuing increasingly direct threats, Iran’s search for a new supreme leader has rapidly become a critical geopolitical flashpoint — one that could shape not only the outcome of the current conflict but also the future balance of power in the Middle East.
